I'm *so* hoping you guys can help me. I have Jerry like 80% of the way talked into a 5 lug swap. The main reason is I found a HELL of a deal on 18' Saleen wheels for the '95, and I have a brand new set of '04 GT wheels (and four new tires) for the '89 if he does this. Right now, the car has a 4 lug 17" Y2KR polished wheel (there are pics of the car in my gallery). Being that the '95 is going to have to sit out this season (I'm cool with that), my little tax return allowance is free. Now, what I'm looking for is the following: People to explain to Jerry that the car will NEVER have a decent choice of wheels without doing this!!!! Make up some crap about how like an extra lug adds speed or something (not that he'll believe it) Praise how AWESOME an '89 LX triple white Vert would look with 17" wheels that are FREE And anything else you guys can think of to sell him on the other 20% of this idea. Thank you in advance.

I agree with you completely, Michelle, no offense, but I hate the 4 lug 5 spoke wheels. It just looks wrong, IMHO.
One thing you're also going to have to consider is that the bigger wheels with the lower profile tires, it's going to leave a lot of room in the fenders... a big gap. Which is why I went with the weld pro stars on my 92lx instead of the 17" stuff I had already purchased for it. A GT can survive it a little better without looking too out of place (at least, ours did anyway), but my LX looked like ass and I wasn't about to touch the suspension on my car and screw up my impressive 60' times to make it look good with those wheels.
Just food for thought.

Well, here's what we're dealing with......... The current wheels are 17x9. The "free" wheels are 17x8. Both run the same size tire combo (245/45 front; 275/40 rear). For some reason, the car doesn't seem to sit "pimp" like you'd expect a stock suspension to sit...........it looks low as hell to me for some reason. Trace...........assess the pics, and tell me what you think. And FWIW, your Vert is THE car I've been preaching about.

uhmmmm you're still running 4 lug. That's like screwing the sheeps leg, and not the sheep! Get with the 21st century...Chevettes are 4 lug...Pinto's are four lug....
Uhmmm the saftey aspect of the added stopping power for those squirly roads and a**hat drivers. Uhm the saftey of an added lugnut for those times that 4 of them fall off.
<here's a good one> You'll need the added lugnut for that power you are going to be making, don't want to snap those cute little 4 banger studs!
You know a guy that has done a couple swaps and could help you out when he isn't working 8,968,789 hours a week or is out of town. Hehehehe.
4 lug 5 spoke wheels are GHEY.
This one time at bandcamp....you had four lug wheels.....
hmmm 4 lug wheel selections...Welds, fake R's, and ponys. Woohoo sell the house, take no prisoners. No one will ever have a mustang with welds or fake r's....or heaven forbid stock ponys, phone dials or my favorites...the urban turbines!
Think how sweet that car would look with 03 or 04 cobra wheels....
You've got all the parts on your 95 (since it will be down for a while...)
You still haven't swapped them out yet...you could have in the time it took to read this!

You're right, it's not as bad as it could be, and by far not as bad as my LX... of course, I did have a couple tricks up my sleeve with mine that kept it from sagging in the back like it wanted to do.
I had Chris come in and look at the pictures also, it does need to come down a little.
I hadn't even thought about the fact that you already have the sizes on the car.
If it were mine, white ponies would be my choice.

two words: Cobra Brakes. Once you stand on a set of PBR twin piston binders, you will never go back to the wimpy stock setup.

Anything 4 lug with the exposed lugs just looks goofy, i'm surprised theres no ricer mod rims that have a simulated 5 lug center cap cover yet.

Show him all the music on my hard drive. That will keep him distracted while you go out and get the 5 lug swap done.

5 lug will give you a chance to get better brakes. If he loves you he'll appreciate the fact that your're safer. It's as simple as asking him how comfortable the sofa is at night

yup, I too forgot about the Roh's. Like Steve said though, your brakes still suck.
Michelle, talk him into the standard 5 lug conversion using the 6 cyl or gt parts (both are the same), then you can step up to the Cobra 13" down the road.

Ok guys..............we're at about 85% now. I think it happened somewhere between Ralph's offer to buy the R wheels, the comment about the 4 cylinder studs snapping, and the fact that the brakes suck. Keep it coming.

I guess I went over this at some other point in some other thread....
All I have done to my brakes is get new unslotted/undrilled rotors, performance friction Z pads, new drums, new shoes, replaced the ebrake yolk, and bled the system really well. I have enough braking power to lock up all 4 tires....ive left black marks a few times in the past when a******s tried running me off the road. As far as brake fading is concerned...i'm sure the stockers are not up to snuff (at all).
Then I thought to myself....if I've been driving hard enough for long enough that my brakes are fading I probably should be slowing the f*** down to begin with.
The stock brakes are that....stock. This isn't a lap machine, SCCA machine, or getaway car for bank robbers. Mostly it sees stop and go traffic at normal speeds, and once in a while blasts down the track to 110mph. For me and what I do with the car I think spending a couple thousand dollars on wheels, spindles, axles, and a brake kit is pretty out of the question and pointless.
I think you can get 73mm calipers that fit on the stock stuff....maybe upgrade to braided brake lines....flush your brake fluid with some fresher fluid. It'll stop your car as hard as your tires will let it be stopped.
IMHO, If you go through the effort of a 5 lug swap you better damn well use those brakes at some track events, SCCA events, or SOMTHIN that puts the brakes to the test. Spending all that money for a drag car or a daily driver is crazy when you can just get fresh parts on the stock base and have plenty of pedal.
