Converted over to manual brakes in my 99 GT.  my car weighs 3050 soo won't be a big issue.   I nuiked the ABS box unit and I am running a new Strange dual piston MC with a Willwoood valve.  Also running a Flaming River manual rack.  I ditched a lot of clutter in the engine bay including the engine LOL.

Nice Doug, now get out the simple green and get to it man.  You're slacking and nows the time with the engine out.

Seriously looks like a nice setup though.

Laugh  That's one good way to get rid of clutter!

Congrats on the brake system!  Let us know how you like it.

Please forgive the "dumb chick" question, but what is the advantage of manual brakes over ABS?

Robin keep in mind this is a drag race car. He is removing a TON of weight.

Oh, ok. Got it!

I guess I haven't been paying attention and didn't realize that this is a drag race car.  (sorry!)

You get a better "feel" for the road with manual brakes too. No spongy pedal either, or that whoosh sound from the vacuum when you depress the brakes.

Robin- that is definitely not a "dumb chick question"- it's a very good question.

Generally, the only advantage (in my opinion) of regular hydraulic brakes over hydraulic brakes with power assist is the weight savings (when saving weight is super important).   The vacuum assist helps you generate more stopping power more quickly by giving you more force at the pedal.

ABS is actually something different.  It is the computer controlled 'assistance' in stopping.  In very simple terms, it actually fluctuates the force you put on the pedal to get the peak stopping force out of your tires.  Unfortunately, ABS is designed for your stock tire and brake setup, so if you have anything different than the stock tires (different size, brand, etc) and stock braking system, it will not function as well as designed.

Ultimately, your peak stopping friction is a property of your tires alone.  The brake system helps you get at that peak stopping friction more quickly.

Very good question!  Deal

Robin, it's the same principle you may have been taught when you learned to drive.  If you hit the brakes and the lock up you release them and hit the pedal again and again.  The computer in the ABS setup monitors the wheels for lockup and modulates the brake pedal for you, many times per second, faster than humanly possible.  This is real important in panic stops and allows steering, evasive manuevers while fully on the brake pedal.  The clicking or pulsating of the brake pedal will actually freak some people out if they haven't encountered it before.
