About a month ago I was forced into getting a new set of wheels and tires (long story).  I had a friend of mine handle the whole finding the wheels tires for me and all he could come up with in Houston for only a 24 hr wait was 275 wide in the front and 285 wide in the back on 18" Cobra R's.  I have noticed that since they were put on the steering wheel is kind of squirrelly(sp) above 45 mph.  The car itself drives fine, still only has a very slight pull to the left, as it always has.  I was wandering if the width of the tires in the front would cause this.  I can't come up with anything else.  Huh  The wheel just seems to want to jitter Huh

If it's like a side to side shimmy, like when the wheel would be rotating, they could be out of balance. Take the front ones and put 'em on back, put the back ones up front and see if the shimmy just transferred to the rear. If it did, the wheel(s) probably need balancing.

I think the only thing the wider tires would do is follow imperfections in the road a lot more... Grooves, dips, potholes, etc.. Mine always pulled to the right under moderate braking but I had 245's up front.

I did try switching them and it made no difference.  I watched them balance the tires, too.  I think that maybe they are just hunting the imperfections in the road as you say, since our roads suck.  Beef  It seems odd to me, though, that speed is a factor.

Do the new tires have a vertical stripe around the tire?  Both my kuhmo 712s and bridgestone re730s had the center stripe and both hunted the road pretty badly.  they were 245s......I dont think its anything to worry about.

They do.  I think that they are just hunting the road.  I drove around a lot today and tried to pay attention to what it was doing.  The amount of shake in the wheel did depend on the surface/quality of the road etc.  I have just never had tires do it this bad I guess.  Maybe the width just maginifies it Huh

If you have a shimmy in the steering wheel that developed when you put the tires on, it could be that the assembly is out of balance (I know you had that checked, but ask them to get a reading on the Hunter after they put the balance correction weights on).  It could also be that the new assemblies are not quite round, which would cause a high-speed fore/aft force variation (the tires push front to back which translates through the steering wheel and causes SW shimmy), which could be a problem in the tires.

Sorry my response is late, but let me know if I can clarify this any.

Oh, and JD, a center rib helps the 'on center feel' of the tire, which is part of the reason you see them on high performance tires.  It gives you better turning feedback.

I am going to look into this again after the car is running again. Beef

Cara - What do you mean by "the new assemblies are not quite round"?  Do you mean that the tires are screwed up?

Well, Brian- no tires are made perfectly round.  Some are just 'less round' than others.  There are limits set for tires for new cars based on the sensitivity of the vehicle.  Any tires you but that are not original equipment have higher limits.

Occasionally, a tire is sold that is much less round than it should be, and it will cause your vehicle to vibrate.  If it does happen to be the front tires that are high, causing steering wheel shimmy, try swapping your fronts and backs.  If the shimmy goes away you know either there is a problem with the tire, the wheel, or the balance correction.

It is also a possibility that the static imbalance of the tire/wheel assembly is so high, it cannot be corrected with regular balance weights.

Keep in mind this is just one possible solution.  I'd try swapping your front tires to the rear to see if the shimmy goes away, then report back!  Smiley
