Why are coilover spring rates so much "lighter" (rating) than other non-coilover?     Huh

Anyone know the spring rates on Drag Launch springs?    Huh

Coilover springs are located closer to the wheel (are farther away from the pivot).  Since they are located farther away from the pivot than the stock springs, the effective spring rate is different.  Since it's closer to the pivot, it needs to be stiffer.

Stock:  note that springs are more inboard than dampers

Coilovers are in same place as damper (thus, a coilover).

Give me a bit and I'll come up with a more technical explanation.  I'll sketch something up and scan it in or something.  Deal

Basically, to get the same effective spring rate, the spring stiffness times the length must be the same.  With a longer length away from the pivot, the spring stiffness must be less.  Here's my 1 minute MS paint sketch!  Wink

The top is the coilover and the bottom is the stock version of the MacPherson...

Another reason I love Cara sooo much, she f***ing rocks on this stuff!!!!!

Its all in motion ratio, the more motion ratio the higher the rate... When the springs moves more like 1/1 the less the rate needs to be.... When a spring is half way in on a control arm, it no longer moves 1/1, its more like 2/1 and has to be stiffer to make the same rate.....

Or what Cara said, I would never second guess what she says.... Grin
