You know those little black "stringy" things that are on the tire that you can pull off if you wanted to, why are they there?

Please explain "sidewall deviations", those little finger wide, slight indentations that go from bead to tread. Exactly what causes that and what kind of factor are they in tire reliability?

Thanks,

Steve

Those 'stringy things' are actually from the vents in the mold.  The purpose of the vents is to let all the air escape from the mold as the tire is 'cooking', and some rubber escapes, too.  You can tear them off- they have no effect on the performance or reliability of your tire.

Steve- your question is a little more complicated.  Those sidewall deviations can be one of a few things, but if it goes all the way from the bead to the tread, it's most likely a material splice (bead filler material, body ply, etc).  A small dent like this shouldn't have any effect on reliability.

If you see a bubble or a raised spot in one place, the tire is probably damaged and should be replaced.

That's awesome, I had no idea it was from that, lol.

Now about Firestone.....are their tires actually good to get now?  Since we all heard news about their tires having defacts some months ago.

I figured it might be something like that but I didn't know. Thanks for the answer.

How about explaining the two different style of molds that are used? I had heard that there is a single piece half of a mold and a mold half that is made up of a number of smaller pieces. I've also heard that the molds made up of smaller pieces make higher quality tires I think because of the ability to make a rounder tire.

Chowder- yes, the tires are very good.

Steve, there are a few different types of molds, and I believe what your asking is about segmented molds.  You can tell if a tire has a segmneted mold because of the flash from the parting lines (most visible in groove bottom).  And yes, a segmented mold can make a more round tire, thus causing less noise and vibration concerns.

That's it, a segmented mold.

I've heard that Michellin formulates their rubber in such a way that the outer part of the tread is soft and then becomes harder as the tire wears thereby prolonging the usable life of the tire. Do you know if this is true? It would seem to be on the LTX Radials that I have on my truck. They seemed to provide good traction when new but now that they have some miles on them they seem to spin easier.

Thanks,
Steve

I'm not sure about that, Steve.  It sounds like something they'd do.  I know in a lot of BS/FS trade tires, they use two different compounds so that you have even more traction when they're half-worn than you did when they were new.

P275/40R17 if you are wanting to stay with the same outer diameter as stock, so your speedo still works.

How about this.  What's the best all purpose, daily driven tire out there?

How's that for a vague question, lol.
