Go with the tire manufacturer's recommended rim size. If it were me, I'd stay in the middle of the manufacturer's recommended range.

Nope. I tried fitting a 255/60/15 on a 7" and it BFG called for an 8" or wider. I know it's not the same exact setup as yours, but almost the same, you get my point. It could be done but dropping tire pressure down when at the track is a little dangerous when the tire doesn't fit the rim well to begin with. I'm no pro track racer, but I'd imagine to make it work safely you'd have to secure the tire to the rim with studs or what not. I know 235's look gay on the back of a Mustang, but mine served their purpose. 1.8 60's with a wussy launch.

Like I mentioned, BFG shows 7" wide rim.
Nitto (245/50/16) will most likely be my choice, 7" rim, and I know they fit (brother had them on his coupe back in '99)

FWIW, I have my 275/50/15 on a 8" rim. An inch wider tire on an inch wider rim.
