I'd like to do the OPPOSITE of my last car (the BadBlk95GT) which was 11.5:1 compression and all motor, and try to add my performance to the Calypso via power adder instead.

This car has 55k original on it, and I'd like to try to stay away from opening the motor for any reason--hence I'd like to add as much to this completely stock setup as possible whilst still being able to pull it all off and return to stock easily for sale or just 'in case'.

What is the best way to go here?  I'm planning on the typical baseline stuff beforehand (gears, exhaust) and beginning the search for the correct unit now.  I've been to superchargers4less.com and found really great deals on the low psi Vortech kits, seems like the Novi 1k will run similarly priced.

My best friend (and experienced mechanic) is pushing towards a turbo, but the install on that scares the hell outta me.  I don't want to chop and custom fab too much.

And juice--I really have no interest in that.

Of all the boost options you've dealt with, what worked best for you?

Thanks in advance

Ralph

All I can say ralph is that you alwasy end up spending at least 500 or more above and beyond whatever the kit costs.

Keep that in mind.

Got injectors and MAF's laying around everywhere.  Not an issue.  Fuel pump, well I'll just put the big one in the tank.

Bypass valve.  This is like a blowoff for a turbo right?

Bypass is different then blowoff.  It simply resirculates the unused air.  MAFs and blow off valves don't work together.

They both accomplish the same thing though and can affect driveability.

Are they a necessity in a low boost kit like the 6 psi vortech?

If you want the car to drive like stock then yes.  With a Bosch setup you might spend 40 bucks.  Well spent.

Oh cool.

I'm thinking just going mellow for now, perhaps generating some pulleys at work to add boost at later stages.  IDK.

24lb injectors ok or 30 required?

On a bone stock motor with 6psi 24s should work fine. I have ran that combo before.

FWIW, check out MFE's sig (and disregard the cam and heads...) for bolt-on stuff.  He's done a lot of suspesion work, so you'll have to determine what you'll be using the power for before you start spending money.

6 psi....You'll love it for 5 minutes and want more.  Go with something that will give you at least 8 and possibly more with pulleys, etc for down the road.  30's should be ok for 8 psi on a stock motor.  Now when you start changing everything, then you might have to step up tp 36's or 42's.

MAFs and blow off valves don't work together.

Yes they do...it has to be a recirculating valve like the stock one on my car.

TURBO Ralph!

My kit came with a bypass valve. Wink  You can't really plan on injectors til you figure out the rest of the combo and see how much HP you'll be pushing.  According to the math, a 24 lb/hr injector is worth ~350 hp at 80% duty cycle and .45 BSFC.  You can increase the fuel pressure and get a couple-few more lb/hr out of it, but, you're best of getting the right injector to begin with, and play with it from there.

Let's start with your goals for the car, and how much you want to spend.

I say JY Turbo.

Most of the JY turbos that I've seen looked like complete and utter crap!  The blower kits on the other hand, most of them look real nice.  This is a nice car.  I'd hate to see you have to go hacking and running crap all over the place in a one off variety.  If money is that big of an issue, just leave it as is until you save enough.  You've got the bike for your speed fix now.

I used a choke pull off... cannot remember the name of the place it came from either.. for the bypass.

Supercharging leads to other things.. something isnt right.. then you have to step it up.. its a never ending cycle of money. Fun yes... worth it.. yes if you have the cash.

My car had a dinosaur blower from Procharger.. was a good unit ( hehe unit ). If I had it to do all over again.. I'd do a 331 with a turbo. Thats just me.. 306+blower = a damn good setup.. excellent driveability as a 5spd car... but with the C4 it sucked balls on the highway.

Oh and if you want to make any of it get to the pavement and be of any use remember tires and all of that lovely suspension s***. Then hope to god your T5 or AOD can handle the power.. cause then comes in a transmission...

Get the idea LOL

I beg to differ Chris. Smiley

It really comes down to how much work and effort is put into it.  Clean up the welds, send it off for a coating, good to go! Smiley

I know there are exceptions Dave, its just that most of the one's I've seen required a lot of fabrication and one off stuff to the point that if something broke you didn't just call up Joe whomever and order one and something always breaks.  You of all people should know that  Grin  I just hate to see Ralph go to buthering up the Notch when a Blower will probably give him what he's looking for and look great at the same time with easy accessabilty to parts.  JMO.

I like their blowers for street duty, but I've seen issues with their customer support noted a lot lately.  I'd have to loo real hard at Vortech.

Chris, I can't argue that...but if it breaks, just tack some more weld onto it. LOL Wink  I see what you're saying.

If you want something like everyone else has and is easy to bolt on, get a blower.  If you want to be a little different and join an elite group of people LOL  Get a turbo, whether manufactured or home-made.

In the blower world, I'd take an intercooled ProCharger over all the rest.  I wouldn't put a Kenne Bell on a track car either.

I'm looking to add some ass to a basically stock looking/driving car.  The best benefit to this coupe is the fact that it's virgin, and I want it to be sleeperish, ya know?

Turbos are definitely the unit of choice...  Can you turbo for close to the price that it costs to charge?  I have a close friend who is willing to plumb it if I get the unit.

If you are willing to peice it together and not just go out and drop a wad on a complete kit, then yes.  If you are looking at buying a complete turbo kit vs a complete blower kit then no.  The blower kits are generally cheaper from what I've seen.  If you are talking used stuf etc, it's a toss up.  There so much used stuff out there it's unbelievable, but you have to be careful.
