I was waiting to see this on the net somewhere. A buddy of mine was talking about this a couple days ago. I can't believe that tubing

The compressible volume between the engine and the turbos will cause some of the largest lag you have ever seen, that and the fact that it will never ever reach anywhere near the boost that those are capable of because exhaust pressures will never catch up.. There is a reason that you ALWAYS see turbo's mounted on the headers in real applications. If you could mount them right off the headers in a Mustang setup, you would have the best possible boost reaction.

Thats also the same reason that people with miles of intercooler tubing and huge coolers end up with less performance than with small/efficient intercooler setups..

You cannot argue the laws of physics... Of course you will still get some boost out of it, just slow and horribly inefficient..

Plus its hard for me to argue what I don't understand. I still wouldn't mind an inefficient 500rwhp.

Its like this, you can have a compressor with a 6hp motor and a 1 gallon tank, it would take no time what so ever to fill the volume of the tank to 120psi, right? Now make it a 30 gallon tank, it takes substantially more run time to gain that same 120psi.. By adding the additional length and diameter of exhaust tubing between the engine and turbos, you are increasing volume in the same way as the larger compressor tank. That and add huge ass turbo that is harder to turn than a small one and you have ton's of lag time without the ability to fully spin up the thing..

Don't work that way... PLUS you then add all the length to get back to the intake.... Wanna put turbos this size on, do it on a tube frame and have them right off the heads..

The way I understood the turbo, it's the HEAT & expansion of the hot exhaust gasses, not the flow itself that gets the turbine spinning. At least that's how I think it works.

well since technically that is what drives a large portion of the pressure of "exhaust", that would be somewhat right. But that expansion takes place at the source, not down the pipe..

yeh... i guess so.. just never seen em packed like that. BTW, who cares how long the lag is? He can sit at the light and spool the thing up on a transbrake

there is a firebird running around town with one of those rear mount turbo kits, this is the 3rd car this turbo has been on, imo it sounds cool, but the performance isn't there, i'm not sure how big the turbo is, imo i wouldn't want a set up like that, but that might be due to i live on a gravel road now
