As if my car wasn't having enough problems, THIS happens.

I got gas about two days ago, filled her up and reset my tripmotor and left.  Then I noticed when I pulled into grab something to eat, my trip stills said 000 and my odometer didn't turn over.

WTF?  What could cause both to go out in the same time?  And how do I fix it?  And how much is this going to cost?

Thanks all.

Check under the car for your Speedo Cable.  Check it against the exhaust.

Been there with my 84.

Check the connector that plugs into the speedo gear...also check the gear itself.

On my grand-am the trip odometer gets stuck after resetting it. As your driving down the road press the rest a few times, this might help or at least it does for me. Smiley

It could also be a bad VSS sensor.

It's your cahooter valve dude.

I would do what Joe said as well. Just drive down the road and keep pressing it, it should break free and reset for you. I doubt it's the cable or the speedo gear.

He said in his post that neither his trip odometer nor his regular odometer moved, so it sounds like the problem could be under the car.

Chowdy, does the speedometer needle move?

That's why I mentioned the speedo gear/connection because neither the trip or odometer were moving.

I'm pondering this more and more, and yes, knowing if the speedo is working would help us out a lot as to where to look.

Speedo is working fine.

Now I tried resetting it while driving yesterday, but that didn't do anything.  I'll try again today but I'm won't be suprisied if that doesn't do it.

And where's the speedo gear?  Under the car?  Where is it exactly under there?
Thanks all.

Was it just your trip odometer getting stuff or both the trip and odometer?

Oops...I looked past that for some reason. It could just be the mechanism that works the odometer and trip meter has broken or something. If you felt comfortable doing it, you could take apart the gauge cluster and look to see if anything back there is messed up around the trip meter.

Well, that rules out all the theories about the speedo gear, the VSS, the electircal connections, etc.

Like Andy said, it's probably something in the gauge cluster itself.  I've had a few of these SN95 gauge clusters apart and it's really not all that complicated back there.  It should be pretty simple to tell if something went wrong with the odometer and trip odometer mechanism.

You just have to have the proper tool (a pocket screwdriver).

The problem would have to be in the speedo head if the speedometer is working. I have had an odometer and trip meter to get stuck before. I eventually got it back working, then proceeded to kick myself because the truck was still under warranty.

Messed up like how?  What controls the odometer and trip odometer?  A wire or what?  I would hate do get all that crap removed and find out I have to replace something I didn't already buy from Autozone or other car places.

And are there any good links online showing me step by step how to do this?
Thanks for the help everyone, I appreciate it.

I think you should beat the f*** out of the dash while driving until they both start working again. It worked for Freaky Steve's truck. LOL

You could always just buy a new gauge cluster Grin

Yeah, but if he's never done it before, he's going to have lots of fun figuring out how to remove it.

But on a serious note, what controls the trip and odometer?  Is it a wire?  Fuse? Fairy dust?

Out of stock currently.

The speedo cable spins the speedo needle, and in the speedo assy, the odometer and trip odometer run like the minute and hour hands on a clock, one faster than the other. If your speedo is still working but neither the trip or odometer is working, I really think you're gonna have to replace the speedo.

And the speedo is under the car correct?  Where can I purchase a new one?  Will any brand suffice?
Is there a way to see if the speedo is broken?  If there is, I'll look under tommorow and see if I can see anything out of the ordinary.

If your needle is working, then the speedo cable is fine. It's something in the speedo assembly.

Oh s***, I just thought of this.

When you buy new gears, you need a new speedo, correct?  So should I have that installed frst THEN get the correct speedo for the gear and have the odometer and tripodometer work?

Rather then buy a replacement speedo, fixing the problem, the getting a new set of gears, then changing out the speedo again.  Am I making any sense?  Do I have this correct so far?

You don't need a new speedo assembly when you get new gears. You need a new speedo gear. It's a little plastic gear that rides on the tail end of the speedo cable inside the transmission. The other end is what is hooked up to the back of the speedo on your dashboard.
