So have you pulled the clutch yet and see if it slides onto the input shaft?

Doing that right now.  Had to eat and spend some time helping Chris on his Cobra.

I did, it is a VERY tight press fit with the alignment tool, which is a few thousandths smaller diameter than the actual input shaft.  The fit on the clutch tool is so tight that I can pick it up with the tool.

It will start on the input shaft, but not slide on.  I'll have Chris try to see if he can get it on later.

Okay, here are some pics I took.

Clutch alignment tool and clutch disk.

Here's how far it will go onto the actual input shaft.  Chris put it on.  It needs to go on another 3/4 of an inch, but won't go.  You can't see the splines on the input shaft from the FW side.

If nothing else, you can chock this one up to experience. NEVER EVER install a clutch wiith out first trying it on the shaft. Wink

I always test fit and have been screwed a few times. It does not cause the trouble it caused you, but has screwed me into having a rack queen for another day or two while waiting for good parts.. More often than not its a screw up by the parts guys though, in your case it looks like a f***ed up part though.. Input shafts are usually not tapered... LOL

when you ordered the clutch, they should have asked you how many splines there were on the input shaft....

and btw....a clutch alignment tool should slide in and out with ease....never tight

sorry this is my first response but i havent been on much

and whitey, spec makes some of the best clutches around. the salesman/saleswoman needs a slap for not asking her about the input shaft spline count.

and cara....you know i love ya.....but you should have stopped when that spline tool felt tight. if that is tight (with a finger puller on it), imagine how tight the tranny would be to get in.

also another tip in case you didnt do it, apply a little grease to the tip of the input shaft where it goes into the pilot bearing

No, the fingers are fine.  Must be the camera angle or something.  It's a cell phone.

Pete, the number of fingers on the spline was the same, I don't think it was a mistake in ordering (not sure), but maybe a bad part???  I also used plenty of grease on the tip of the input shaft.

And 'I should have stopped?' well, I followed the instructions to a tee.  There are some things you know from experience, that one wasn't written anywhere, so there was no possible way I could have known.

Looks like the part was just poorly manufactured, not the wrong part.  This afternoon, I compared the old clutch disk to the new one, and the new one had casting flashed and appeared to be tapered or mushroomed at the end.

The old one fit nicely over the input shaft, but the new one just bottomed out.  I tried taking some of the casting flash off with a small file, but even that didn't work, and I was just afraid to take off too much material.  I'll talk to the guy from the shop I ordered it from tomorrow.  If that doesn't work, I may take it to my machine shop and see what they can do with it.

Well congrats on figuring out WTF was wrong.  You'll be doing burnouts in no time.

If that doesn't work, I may take it to my machine shop and see what they can do with it.

I wish I could say stuff like that. Sad

It is a 10 tooth disk.  Just looks like a crappy manufacturing job.  I wish I would have noticed this before!

The shop I bought the clutch from is great to work with, and they're sending me out a new disk today!  I have to get the old one packaged up.

Call SPEC directly, tell them what is going on. Their customer service is pretty good, at least it has been for me. I've never had issues with any of the three SPEC clutches I've bought, I even sent one back for refurbishing, way cheaper then buying a whole new one.
