I've decided to get a set on Pony Rs when the time comes for new wheels and I thought about a rear disc conversion. Any reason that - with this particular wheel choice - I should go 5 lug?

Oh yeah, if someone can tell me what's making my engine surge at idle causing the voltmeter to rise and fall accordingly along with headlights dimming and getting brighter at the same time would be helpful. Grin

EGR valve or IAB motor

I would not do a 5 lug swap on your car unless you were going for aftermarket rims or something with exposed lugs.

Idle air bypass.

I also am a firm believer in the ford motorsport or who ever it was idle air bypass adjuster plate.

Yes dot.  that is the one.

But make sure you either clean out or buy a new IAB solenoid or the plate may not help.     If it has the original EGR valve on it too I am sure it is hammered.

You could just start the car and unplug the thing.  Idle will drop a bit quick between shifts, but no other side effects.

Most go to 5-lug for wheel selection and brake options.

If you don't care about having much better brakes or a wider selection of wheels, don't bother with the swap.

It's all good.  I've replaced the damn thing on every one on mustangs and on Heather's as well.  I find it much easier and a better running car with it unplugged.  I honestly did it until I got the chance to buy another and ended up just saying screw it and left it that way.  I did enjoy the way the idle fell between shifts and taking off with that the damn purple ram clutch.

I've done a 5-lug on mine, so I could have bigger brakes. Wheel selection wasn't the issue as much as having big brakes because the stock ones are puny, especially with as short of run off as we have at the local track. Also to me 5 spoke wheels with 4 lugs looks retarded, but that might just be me.  It is some work, but it isn't difficult dependent upon your skills.
As far as the surging make sure your base idle is set right. With the car off and the IAB disconnected it should start and idle, just slow. If you need to turn the throttle screw to bring the idle up you can then turn the car off and reconnect the IAB. It should be good after provided that the inside of the bypass is not full of junk. Have you checked if the car has stored any codes??

It can be done in an hour with lincoln rotors and ranger aerostar axles. Cheesy

I don't seen dot needing to worry about brakes.   Just a cruiser.

I don't think he is either, unless he wants to have some larger brakes on there for when he gets his 22's. LOL

I've pretty much narrowed it down to the fact that I have a gigantic intake and heads that can't handle it.

That would have nothing to do with it.

Here's how to reset the idle
