So yeah, I'm trying to make clearance room for my headers and have been ran into every problem imaginable. This, coming from the schrader valve guy, so I guess car trouble and me go hand in hand. First order of business is the steering shaft. Every thread I read mentioned "Yeah, to get clearance for the driver side header, just remove the steering shaft! It's only help up by one bolt, and it's super, super easy to take off!" Unfortunately, I don't share that same mentality because this piece of s*** refusing to budge. From the threads I made in da kookie korral and stangnet, guys have been mentioning spreading out the clamp a bit, and the shaft should collapse on itself. I've tried everything I can think of but this thing is simply not budging. First, and foremost, I'm sure some of you have removed this damn shaft. If so, I beg of you, for the sake of children living in my neighborhood, tell me how to do this. In this first pic, is this the spot where I need to pry the clamp outwards? It's located right near where the bolt once was. During this time, do I need to pull up, pull down, or wiggle the shaft itself? Here's a picture from the bottom, if it helps. Lastly, just out of curiosity, is the EGR tube stuff usually a pain in the ass to take off from the passenger side header? I've been going at it for about a half hour and even though the wrench is turning it, it's still really, really tight. Cars suck.

yes, you are going about it the right way. Thats the right place to spread it. The one on my 93 was a bit cantankerous and required some penetrating lube and some persuasion to get it moving, but it did. Hose it down with some Kroil, PB blaster or such and smack it a few times. It should slide down.

Like others said lubing will make it slide easier, you could try loosening the two steering rack nuts to slide it forward a little too.

put some heat on the egr pipe bolt...itll come right off
as far as the steering shaft, get in front of the car...under the car with a prybar and a hammer. put the tip of the prybarat the base of the knuckle you unbolted (as if to tap it towards the firewall).
it will slide right up with a few taps (dont pound it, just tap it). it may wobble a little...so alternate sides as you tap it

Lop it off with a cutting torch. And put a manual rack in there while you're at it.

Yep, BBK.
Thanks for the tips guys, it's appreciated. Hopefully I should be able to get some more done before work tomorrow.
Good call on the heat, Pete. Completely forgot about trying that.

Wow, just wow.
Why would you ever go with longtubes? 5 more hp for much more work. Shorties would have been a 2 hour install.

Aight, finally, finally got the steering shaft off. I had to tug on it HARD but it came out okay, and the driver side header is in.
I just have to somehow manage to get the left most bolt screwed in so I can place the gasket. Only problem is that particular hole is an absolute b**** to get to. Not enough room for a socket wrench or anything; gotta try by hand but all my attemps have failed so far.
Thanks for the help regarding the shaft guys. The neighborhood kids have a shot at a long and joyous life after all.

Like mine too, especially since putting the 3" ball socket on them. I just have to somehow manage to get the left most bolt screwed in so I can place the gasket. Good to hear it came apart.

From what I've read from shoot outs and such, LT's provide more low RPM power than shorties without giving it up top.
Plus from the sound clips I've heard, it makes your exhaust much more pissed off. That's why I got 'em.
Install isn't THAT bad either so far. I mean, yeah I'm b****ing but at least I'm making progress you know? Not a lot of stuff out there that is completely "bolt on" and LT headers are no exception. Harder to install than shorties? Undoubtedly yes. Worth it when I finally get them both in? I'd like to think so.

They kill a lot of the midrange drone you typically get with shorties. I've put them on before I put the engine in so don't really know how much of a challenge it is the other way.

Use a close-ended wrench. I could never use a socket wrench on any header bolts with my BBK's. Okay, maybe a few, but most I had to use the close-ended variety.

Never heard of those wrenches either. Look pretty nifty. Dan, yeah, I had to use the old fashioned wrench on a few of 'em. I don't mind doing it that way but it's a painfully slow experience. Now....alright guys, I need some help. Again. The passenger side header is living up to it's name as being a pain in the ass. I'm dropping it from the top since I don't have the room to attempt going at it from the bottom and is seriously THAT close to going through. I need just a little bit more room and it will slide right down. Problem is I don't know how this would be accomplished. Hell, I even grabbed the intake, pushed the engine to the side as far as I could and is STILL not going in. I mean, it looks like I just need a tad more room at all times. I snapped some pics since pics rock. This is with the engine not tilted, just rested normally. Does anyone have any ideas how I could get this last header all the way down?
