Now that I got my cold idle problem out of the way, I thought I would fix a minor exhaust leak (right after the x-pipe, connecting to the muffler). Well, I started off just fine unbolting the muffler from the x-pipe and I just happen to shine the light on the pipe right after the muffler...... Oh nice, a rusted out spot, when did that happen... grrr

Anyways, this is what I ended up with tonight.

* 100_2137.jpg (24.38 KB. 267x241 - viewed 321 times.)

Now I gotta find a way to fix0r it with out breaking the bank. I have a few options, 1) there is a local shop that might be able to fix it, 2) Fix it myself (I always liked this solution), 3) wait till I have the money and replace both side with new. (my headers and x-pipe are newer, this is still stock) What do you guys think? Section one of the options an give details why you picked it, please.

btw, what is the pipe called right after the muffler that goes over the rear end?

Tailpipe, your local NAPA has the listing for the 2 1/2" for LX and GT  models, they need to look in their catalogs to find it, they even show up on line.

I thought it was the tailpipe but wasn't sure if it had a special name or anything, It's a bit longer then most. Smiley

I checked my napa online and they have the tail pipe for $33, that's not bad at all. I might just pick one up. But at the same time, I'm kinda thinking about replace everything back from the x-pipe. If I did replace everything I would have to wait for the money (maybe this winter) or I could just replace the tail pipe and deal with it later. Hrmmm, what to do, what to do....

Make sure you're looking at a 2 1/2 pipe. Without tailpipes it's like dumps, louder and stinkier. Figure what a complete catback will cost through NAPA or from summit, then go from there.

Yeah, I would be inclined at this point to start shopping ebay for a cat back system. Do it once instead of a poorly performing band-aid.

That kit is about the same money if I replaced everything myself. I really think I'm going to save my money for now and get that kit this winter. That would make the whole exhaust system new(er).

The fit, finish and quality of the kit would surpass most anything you could get locally anyhow. That and mandrel bends and stainless, you ain't gonna get that off the shelf at Napa or any other muffler shop in town. Going local at anything less than a high end performance shop would be a large step down from this kit.

When you fit it, just take your time and get everything lined up. Tighten it all down in increments, this keeps you from flexing part of the system and pulling another part out of alignment.

Ya, it's going to be a PITA but I think it's going to be better then trying to fit my rusted out stock stuff with new pipes... Wink

With my current lack of money, I don't think I'll be able to buy anything for at least a few months. Thanks for the information though. I hope to have it ready for the road by summer.

It's been a while from my last post on this topic but.... I have the money (and the approval) to buy a replacement cat-back system.

Should I just go with the Megaflow kit I posted? It's the right price range... thoughts?

Also, I should note that I want to buy something in the next few days. I would like to install the new cat-back system and have it all ready for warmer weather... Grin

I'm a huge fan of the Magnaflow cat-back. I had one on my old 01 and LOVED it.

I'll likely do the same one of these days. If you can swing it, I say go forth young man. Grin

I'm not a huge fan of straight through mufflers but if that's the sound you like then go for it.

One thing to note is those crush clamps suck. Band clamps are the way to go even though they'll cost you more.

That's the only thing really holding me back. I've checked out a few sound clips but they aren't the best quality. I'll play them at home and see how they sound, might be the speakers here at work.

Steve said the same thing, he also said that welding it would be better. I'm not sure if I'll go the welding route but I'm going to look at both options (price wise). Where can I get band clamps?

Summit and Jegs have the band clamps. I only mentioned the band clamps if you were really against letting someone else install/weld up the system. Welding is always better than clamps and if you lived close enough I'd do it for you.

I've always been a Flowmaster guy and will only do custom Flowmaster kits on any of my future Mustangs. I don't care if everybody else has them, I still love the sound!

Not sure if you mentioned it or not, but what kind of sound are you looking for? What do you want to hear at idle? Cruising? At WOT? You looking for the classic H pipe sound or are you interested in the racy, exotic-ish X pipe?

FWIW, I have BBK LT's, a Dr. Gas X and Spintech Sportsman mufflers and I love the way mine sounds. Slight idle, noticeable cruising noise (but not annoying) but when I go WOT, it absolutely SCREAMS. Very, very sinister.

I'd get the band clamps at Jegs. When I ordered mine, they were the cheapest at the time. If you thinking you might want your exhaust changed out in the future, clamp it. If you really don't see yourself changing anything once it's installed, get them welded.

First I should say I currently have MAC Shorty Headers --> Offload X-Pipe --> New Cat-Back (of my choice)

I want very low/mild sound at idle. Nice sound cruising and evil sounding WOT. Evil

I don't think I'll change anything after I get a full setup but you never know. I might change out the rear bumper and install LX tail pipes or something crazy like that. Do you happen to have the URL to these band clamps?

Ok,

I think I know what I want. I think I'm going to buy the megnaflow kit that I posted but buy band clamps so I if I want to swap out the mufflers down the road I can.

So that kit plus 4 of these clamps:
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=WLK-33226&N=700+400358+4294923429+4294919985+115&autoview=sku

$13 per clamp seems a bit pricey... Sad

Thoughts?

If you are not going to go with the welding, those clamps are the way to go. I would add exhaust sealer to the pipes, assemble and then clamp down once in position, you will have a good solid seal then! Grin

Yeah those clamps look exactly like the ones I got. Easy as pie to set up to, just slip the pipes into each other with the clamp on end and tighten the two bolts down. Make sure the clamps aren't backwards or anything. If you start it up and notice an exhaust leak near one of the clamps, it's either because it isn't tightened correctly or possibly backwards.

Let us know how you like it. Magnaflow was on my list before I went with what I currently have.
