My car has a high RPM(4500-up) ping and I can't find a fix for it.  The timing is at 12 and it still does it with 93 octane.  I've recently put in water wetter to try to lower the temps, but it didn't help.  Anyone have any ideas?

What is the original initial timing supposed to be? Retarding timing is the usual fix for pinging if not octane related. If you have a bad fuel injector perhaps you have a cylinder that's not getting enough gas and is running too lean?

The factory is 8 I think, but I've read of many people being able to advance to 14-16 and not having problems.  Maybe I'll just have to back it down some more.  The last time I checked plugs, they all looked normal/the same.

Have you checked your PCV valve? The reason why I say this is because I replaced the PCV valve on my 95 convertible with one of those cheap metal Autozone ones. It was allowing oil to get into my intake. The oil was getting into my combustion chambers and causing me to detonate. It also caused an oil consumption problem.

Clean the MAF wires, clean out the EGR and run a fuel system cleaner like Lucas injector cleaner. That should clear up the problems. I'm running 16* on my '94 Cobra without a problem.

Mine still has the stock PCV valve, but I've heard of the oil suck up problem before.

I'll give an injector cleaner a shot, as I've never done that before.  Also, how would I go about cleaning the EGR valve?  I'd remove it right?  What would be safe to clean the inside of it with?

Carb cleaner will eat away the carbon built up in it. Definately clean the MAF wires as that will cause it to ping also.

I used carb cleaner and just pressed the valve in/out intill I tought it was clean. I don't know if the EGR valve is differnt on the 94/95, but that's how I got all the junk out of mine.

Try checking the plugs again. I had a severe lean condition in my '95. Turns out the 24# injector in #3 wasn't operating. Caused a big bad mess, and the pinging was just the start of it.

I'll have to give them a good look this weekend, I'm not driving it hard again until I figure this out.  My EGR does make a sort of buzzing sound sometimes, so perhaps that it the root of the problem?  I'l give the MAF a good cleaning again--rubbing alcohol right?

If you need a deterrent, I'll post pics later of what resulted from the lean condition/bad injector. Lips Sealed  I've never heard of a "buzzing" EGR, but I'm sure it can't be a good thing. Do you have a fuel pressure gauge?

OMG!!!! I just thought of something else! Do you have a stock balancer by chance? We had a HUGE problem with ours that nearly cost us the motor. The timing on the car was always goofy. The timing would read CRAZY high, but the car wouldn't ping. Finally, we got the ping. We found out that we had "inertia ring slippage", which caused our timing to be WAAAAAAAAAY out. Where it would seem that we had say, 20 degrees, we really had around 40.  Roll Eyes We thought it was a rare problem, but it seems to be common, especially in the 94-95.

I have a pressure gauge on the rail, and it reads around 34 psi with the vacuum attached.  I do have the stock balancer, but I'm unsure of what a failing one would look like.  Perhaps I should back the timing down until it stops just to be safe?  BTW, the car pulls like mad until I hear the sound and let off.  Would the temp of the car have any effect on this?  I have been wondering if my high speed fan is working, because the gauge usually only reads about 1/4 the way up when cruising, but can get up near 1/2 when I'm "driving" it.

LOL!  Here we go!  Actualy I might wind up doing that this winter.  I've been reading where this is a problem for many folks with stock timing and using premium because of the computer.  The guy I bought the car from said that this has some sort of Comp cam in it, and there's the CARB sticker under the hood.  Maybe that's causing the problem?  Never REALLY got onto it in Guam, as the top speed limit on the island is 45.

You could have a clogged fuel filter too if it's under throttle.

I'll also give that a shot along with the EGR cleaning.  Both sounds like reasonable explanations.  How would I check to see if my balancer is shot?

We did ours the easy way. We popped the balancer off the '95, then the one off the '89. We then lined them up by the key way. You could EASILY see how far off the '95 was. If I had to guess, I'd say there was an easy 3-4 inch difference.  Shocked

Whoa!  Is there a way to tell with the thing on the car  Is there obvious deformation of the outer ring or anything?

Mine looked fine when it was on the car.........that's why we never suspected anything. I've heard of some cases where the ring will actually "separate", but in our case, it never did...........it just moved to a different location.
