I don't think it looks bad at all. I'm not sure I buy the fender flare story. Makes it look a little more like a track car though.

There is or could be some truth to that.  There's a guy on corral, I forget the username, that has a Japanese mustang.  It has flares.  You could even get the old-school rub strips on the bodyline on 1994 and 1995 GT and GTS's here.  My buddy built his 408-powered monster that was featured in King Of The Street from one, and I thought the rub strips should have stayed Tongue

And I'm going to say it not only doesn't look bad, but I'd just about trade everything I own and Amber for it.  The hard part would be coming up with the other 10 grand.

I actually like the car itself, the wheels especially. Like was said earlier in the thread, it looks more like a track car...its nice to see a Cobra, WITHOUT Cobra wheels on it for a change.

I just noticed they're Fikses, that company puts out some awesome looking wheels.

Yeah, me likey.  If I don't buy a termy in the spring, I can see myself duplicating this car, at least stance, wheels and trim.

The fender flares were installed at the factory on export Mustangs, but you couldn't order them as an option here in the U.S.

I had them on my '96 GT and I have them on my Cobra.  I bought them years ago from Performance Parts Inc. and they are an OEM Ford part.  They still pop up on Ebay every now and then.

Do you want to know why?  Japan has their own safety standards, like our EPA, NTSB, etc.  One of theirs says that the fender MUST cover the whole wheel.  They also have others like, all cars MUST have a yellow side marker light mid-height on the fender, just ahead of the front doors.  Their speedometers are in Km/hr, etc.  All Japanese Mustangs are built with these things.

We've been putting those flairs on for decades, just to meet Japan's safety standards (and so Ford can sell Mustangs over there).  Those fender lips used to be a real ugly chrome-looking plastic and we put that on all colors of Mustangs.  The amber side light looked like it was just stuck on, bulging out like a semi-trailer light.  They ALWAYS had folding outside mirrors (in both directions, and THAT was cool).  Their Mustang sun visors were written in Japanese.

Do you know how cool it is to own a Mustang in Japan?  With their gas prices, only the VERY rich could afford a Mustang, and some were Cobra's.  We used to run specialty cars like that in batches, at Dearborn Assembly.  OPEC Mustangs (for Arab countries) didn't have heaters or heated glass.  NONE of those cars had pollution controls, and we charged them MORE to take that stuff off.  More correctly, we had to re-engineer our Mustangs to exclude those engine and instrument panel/EEC components.

Everybody wants something a little different, all around the world.  While coastal America is clamoring to buy Japanese cars, they're doing the very same thing in Japan with our cars.  They want Mustang's, Harley's, and Elvis.  The difference is, we aren't 'dumping' our stuff over there, and they don't have 250 million people.

You can order the side lights, fender lips, sun visors written in Japanese or Arabic, etc., at your friendly Ford dealership, but who wants that ugly crap?  That's the reason American Mustangs don't have it, and if the Japanese could take it off, they would in a minute.

Those 'Japan Export Mustang' pics show the fender lip flairs; they kinda jump out at ya.

Did you notice the yellow side marker yet?  You need a good side view (at night) to get the full effect.  (They're ugly as hell.)  Maybe you can get a few dozen of those and sell them on eBay.  (I can just see everyone cutting holes in their Mustang fenders for a trailer light.)

Also notice the headlight prisms are different.  That car is a V-6 Mustang, and those aren't Cobra clear lenses.  The tail light colors are different too.  If I remember right, one of the segments must be amber.  Again, that conforms with Japan's safety standards, which is different from our Department of Transportation.
