I know I've read its not that hard if you have the tools, and I know there is a video out there that walks you through it. Reason I ask is, I found someone giving away a z-spec t5 that has a busted 3rd gear. The seller(or giver I guess it would be) says he believes the mainshaft, steel bearing retainer, case, and various other parts are still good. He bought it new in 99 or 00, and it has about 60K on it.

Kevin, wouldn't have been a T-5 in the years you noted. Best make sure of what you are getting. If it's a T-45 the world if full of busted ones.

no, the guys got a built 92 GT. He bought the t5z in 99, or 00, and put about 60K on it before he broke 3rd. Now he's got a tremec 600 like he should for his setup.

FREE? Jump on it! Could be as minor as a slider/synchro assembly, could be as major as a cluster shaft, but in any case the parts aren't all that expensive and the build isn't all that difficult. You can have the thing opened up far enough to get an idea of what's ahead inside of 10 minutes with nothing more exotic than some metric sockets and a 3/16 punch to get the shift block off the shaft. A straight freshening might cost you $165 or so in parts plus whatever small tools you don't have, like maybe a mag-base dial indicator and some spring clip pliers. A shop press is really handy. I pay no heed to the "name that tune" types who insist they can rebuild a T-5 in 6 minutes, blindfolded, with one arm tied back, while reciting the alphabet backwards with a mouthful of chewing gum...and without a press. You need a press to do it right. If you don't have one, get the trans anyway, you'll find a way to get access to one.

That was kinda my thought. It was posted at another mustang forum, in a regional forum. To go get the t5z, it would cost me about $20 in gas, but thats no biggie. Thanks for the advice. I know a friend back in IL could rebuilt them as if it was a walk in the park. He was always rebuilding them for friends. He would charge $100, plus parts, and part of the deal was no time frame. He would get to it when he could.

Thanks for the link. They sell rebuilt t5zs for $935. I'll have less than $300 in mine. I'm waiting till about 2:30 to make sure work doesn't attempt to call me in. As long as they don't call, I'm heading south to pick it up around 3.

Thanks man, I'll keep that in mind. Just thinking, I remembered I have a 86 t5 up in IL that wouldn't stay in first. No grinding, but as you slipped the clutch, it would pop back into neutral. Maybe I'll have my parents ship that down, and I can attempt to fix that as well once I get this fixed.

Yup, they are just nuts and bolts... Only thing you may need that you do not have is a press and the holders needed to remove gears and bearings.

Is the 3650 a similar rebuild?

I'm back. Just shy of 5 hours round trip when you factor in 10 minutes of getting a little lost by his place, 20 minutes of BSing, and 30 minutes at Chick-fil-A on the way home. Looks like google was almost dead on for their time estimate.

I have the rebuild video on its way. Now I need to get a large table so I have plenty of room for all the 117 pieces.

ziplocks and a sharpie will be your friend...bag&tag everything
There are three problems with that video: 1) It doesn't tell you until REassembly that you're supposed to have scribed the location of the gears inside their sliders, which apparently is no big deal because I haven't done it yet, 2) It doesn't cover the later model reverse helper spring configuration, which is completely different than the style they show. Take some pics BEFORE you disassemble it to save yourself some time figuring out how to put it together, and 3) It also doesn't cover the fact that later model T5's like yours have a shaft brake "synchro" assembly for reverse to make them less prone to grinding. Again, not rocket science, but a little surprising when you're standing there with a handful of parts he doesn't have on the video. There is a tab on that shaft brake that engages a slot on the tailshaft housing...remember that when you go to install the tailshaft housing! Otherwise you'll bolt the thing down, shear the tab, and render the shaft brake useless.

I got this t5 for free, so I just figured I would learn how to rebuild it for fun. I still haven't gotten around to opening this t5 up yet.
