A guy in the hospital just bought a '96 Cobra.  I was looking over it briefly and noticed some strange things.

1. It has a solid rear axle.
2. the SVT emblem is on the right side of the trunk, and there's no Ford emblem on the trunk at all.

What gives?  Is this normal on the '96 Cobra?

Wow... someone is actually talking about Mustangs on this Mustang site...    LOL

I don't think IRS came until '99 or something.... correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd imagine that this would be a good thing for this former LT1 owner?  He's into 1/4 mile a bit.

IRS didn't start until '99. Up to that point, they ALL had the solid rear axle. As for the Ford emblem, it should have had one of those, too. The SVT should be on the left, the Ford oval on the right. If you wanna verify that it's a REAL Cobra, take a quick look at the VIN. I'm not sure about '96, but I know '93-'95 will have a "D" as the 8th digit of the VIN if it is authentic. Smiley

The guy says that the VIN checked out before he bought it, but I wasn't sure about the emblems/bumper.  The bumper says Cobra on it, but I thought that this didn't come about until around 99 as well.  It does have the correct motor in it though.  Perhaps that's all that counts?

The "Cobra" embossed rear bumper cover started in '96. How 'bout his airbag? Does it say "Cobra"? The wing would have been different had the car been a '94-'95, but his '96 should have the same wing as a '94-'98 GT. Changing the motor to a DOHC is alot of work and all, but I know someone who put one in a '96 Vert.

P.S. I moved this thread here in hopes that you'd get more answers. Smiley

I didn't even pay attention to the airbag, but the interior looked the same as mine, except he has black leather.  The spoiler looked the same as mine as well, which raised my eyebrow.

No biggie on the move, I haven't even been to this side of the site yet, looks like quite a bit of activity!

Will do!  I'm trying to ask some of my tech questions here rather then that "other" place, in hopes of expanding the site more.  There seems to be plenty of experienced folks who visit this site.

The SVT logo should be on the left side of the decklid, but people can change emblems. Not really a big deal. Cobra bumper should say COBRA, brakes up front should say COBRA, airbag should say COBRA, 8th VIN digit should be a V. Check the VIN before anything else.

It is probably as cobra. Perhaps it was in an accident and whoever did the repairs put the SVT logo on the wrong side of the lid?
