Something els I might do to the stang this winter is replace the gear to 3.55 or 3.73. How hard is it to change the gears? Maybe we should post an article on this?

It's defnitely not something you would want to do without all the special tools it requires, and definitely if your not absolutely sure you know what you are doing.  It all depends on your access to the tools, your learning abaility and above all your experience/patience.  It can be done, but I wouldn't personally recommend it. Boo, how much do you think a shop would charge for something like that?

I just paid a mechanic $270 to install my 3.73's, Richmond kit, and trac-loc kit. They're pro50 gears and we can't get them to be quiet. I just got my Ford Racing 3.73's from gefracing.com today. gonna have those put in and see what happens.

I would have done the swap (or tried) myself but all the tools and presses, etc... just easier to have it done.

Go to a ford dealer once.. they want upwards of $700 to do it.. no joke!

Maybe someone else here has an idea of people that could do it.

After I get done with my "winter rebuild" I might save up for a gear change. I didn't think it would cost that much. Is that for the gears also or just install? I can get the gears cheap online to save some $$$.

If you can get it done around $300 or less it's not a bad deal. Usually it's priced as a 5-7hr job at around $50/hr

That's just for the install, You can get the FRPP gears at gefracing.com for $160 shipped, trac-loc kit was around $50, and the Richmond full install kit was around $100

Your close enough that our guy could do it for ya (gears are the only thing we DON'T do). The guy is a Ford Master Tech, and has a lift in his garage. You supply the ring & pinion, and a bottle of Friction Modifier. He supplies shims, and so on. Cost? $150. Guy is VERY precise, and only needs 2 days. BTW, he's late 40s, and he's not the "joyride" type. He has a low 10 second Stang himself.

FWIW, he's the same guy that did my gear install.. very nice guy, and very professional.

Here is the sheet I got after my gears were installed..  Keep in mind, mine was a little more because I had the traction lock replaced, and had a few other little problems. Wink

I do this kind of thing all the time,
I use the right tools most of the time too....I hate doing the job twice Smiley
BUT if your willing to take chances on noise (did you hear that? na, the exhaust is too loud!) I could walk you though it.

The FRPP gears are in and quiet. DO NOT buy Pro50 gears, this has been an expensive lesson. I won't ever buy Pro50 anything after finding out how they teat people either.

Thanks Quake, plus the Ford kit is actually a kit. You get the R&P, shims, crush sleeve, and pinion nut.

I'm going to install a 7.5" trac-lok in my rearend. I hear you do NOT need an axle housing spreader to get the carrier out, is this correct? Should I attempt to take up any slack in the pinion bearings, or should I leave it alone? What spec do I need to torque the ring gear bolts down to?

Thanks
