Announcement from Work:

OK Race Fans !!! Start your woodblocks!!!

The gauntlet's been thrown down and 4 of the 5 possible teams have stepped forward.

There is still one more spot open for a daring duo willing to challenge the likes of last year's winning team, Pete and Mike. Bud and Adam are back again this year for a rematch after their humiliating defeat at the hands of fellow engineers. Kevin and yours truly have combined rival street racing camps (Ford and Buick) to take it ALL this year... but the ---- Cares committee will also be fielding a car as well, so watch out for them.

So BRING IT ON !!! If you brave enough to take us all on... or just want to have a really great time and support a truly great cause!

The guy that I am teamed up with owns a rather nice Grand National and he is very creative and artistic. This should be a blast...

Any advice on this?!?

Yep...

Re drill your axle holes so you can make sure they are true. Slim and aero helps. True your wheels and hubs. Polish your axles and wood face where the wheels touch. Graphite lube for the wheels.

I have a bunch of trophies for pine wood derby!!  SOooo much fun!  I have 3 1st places and 1 2nd place from boy scouts back in the day.

-Make the car the maximum legal weight... exactly.  You can pour hot liquid lead into the body and then drill it out from the bottom once it has cooled to get the exact weight... at the track on the tracks scales.  Heavier cars hold speed at the bottom of the track much better.

-Before you mount the wheels, sand them completely smooth by placing the wheels on a small nail, inserting into a drill, and sanding down at high rpm.  This will smooth any bumps and make the wheel true

-When mounting the wheels on the car, place the car on a large pane of glass to ensure all 4 wheels sit perfectly flat and push the car to ensure the car tracks straight with no yaw.

-Bring graphite to the track and lube up all axles before each run.

I have had success with placing the weight on different areas of the car.  My first car had weight just infront of the rear axle and completely obliterated the competition.  My other three cars had the weight over the center which worked out good as well.  The problem with putting the weight too far back is the car has a tendancy to bounch and skip down the track.  Getting it out front stabilizes the car as it goes down the track.

We have something similar to that coming up this month called the cardboard classic.  We can only use carboard, glue, paper, and tape to put ours together, then they send us down one of the ski slopes.  I am trying to talk a few of my friends into it, but they all think I am crazy

HA... i used to to the cardboard boat regatta back in the day.  We made a couple boats.... the first years boat was damn near sea worthy!  It was before they banned polyurethane type paints and wood for support.  We used like three layers of heavy borg warner timing chain shipping boxes, a wood frame around the top, duct taped the bottom, and then polyurethaned the entire boat.  The damn thing could hold 6 people securely taking on no water!!!!

FYI, design of the car really has no bearing.  Only thing I will add on that is that you keep the front of the car flat.  Pointy cars are a pain in the butt to put on the staring pegs Smiley  You could put weight and tires on a brick shaped car and it could out run a missle car.

My fastest car actually had the least aerodynamic characteristics, where as my last car looked like a nascar and got beat at the big end of the track.  This other car just had more speed.

We know that.  The original was to paint it like a brick s***house.

His art skills compared to most is equivalent to your photography skills compared to most.

We may end up shaping it like several bearings (tapers - cup and cone, ball bearings, etc.) to represent the company.
Or like a skateboard (very flat) with a Ford Emblem on one end and a Turbo Buick emblem on the other.  In the middle - The bowtie with the "no" symbol around it.

Our entry.
Did not win, but damn did it get the attention.

Our engineers won (again), setting the track record 3 times that night.

(FYI - that is not a tree branch.  That is a Dowel Rod that has been textured and painted)

It is my understanding that the fastest cars only have 3 wheels touching.  Perhaps Chris can go into more detail.

Chris and I talked about it on the phone one night.  We decided to go with more show than go.

Next year, we are building at least two cars...  one will be a go car.

Actually, I may ask Chris to test it and tune it.

We have some ideas.  We may ask some of the guys from the Boy Scouts if we could test it ahead of time.  Even they hate the arrogance of the engineers.
