Sittin there breakin in the cam in this POS El Camino, about to shut it off and a *** damn smoke storm flares up. I kill it and say "oh s***, hope it's not on fire". Look under the car and there's a clear fluid pouring out from the torque convertor cover. s***, I think I blew the rear main seal I think to myself. I touch the fluid, and it's cold? It's oil.

I have the wife start the car real quick with me on top of the engine, and sure enough as I thought, the oil pressure sending unit busted open and sprayed oil ALL OVER the *** damn thing! Greaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat. Just f***ing wonderful.

Chevrolet thinks of some damn ingenius places to put them too.  You needed a mirror to even see the last one I changed on a Cavalier.

Last time I checked, the oil pressure sending unit gets oil before the rest of the engine...

I vote smart ass... Grin

In theory, since the oil pressure sending unit is fed first, you would see the leak on initial startup and know it before you pump 5 quarts of oil to the ground and it catches fire... Wink

Oh gotcha I see what you're saying.  Naw it ran fine for about 10-15 minutes before the thing burst on me.  It was running then ~15 minutes later I had a big smoke-out.

I'm saying that there is a very good chance that you hurt some bearings in the motor.  The oil normally goes like this:

pump > filter > sending unit > bearings > camshaft > etc.

I have never seen a sender leak bad enough to cause starvation, unless pumped dry. Not that it's not possible, just never seen it.

Well, the question is was it leaking, or was it spewing?  Supposedly the SBC only requires 7psi of oil pressure to float the crank, but if it was losing enough pressure to starve the bearings, it could be bad.

I'd check the oil to make sure.

That's what you get for letting that woman talk you into working on a Malibino.  Ugh.

...

If it didn't run long leaking, you're probably fine.  Here's what I'm wondering, did the sending unit rupture because of general failure or might the oil pressure bypass have decided to stick?

Put a new sender in and spool it up to 5 grand.  If the oil filter explodes, haul the motor out and pray.

Why would the oil be cold if he was breaking in a cam. I thought they had to run for 20 minutes at around 2K??

Nah as soon as I saw it smoke up I shut it down.

Seems to be running good now.  Looking at the old sending unit, I think it was just a piece of s***.

My camaro hates me too. Last time out, I was on my way to get gas, my gas gauge recently stopped working. I ran out on my way. I broke down in the middle of a busy road. After getting it to the gas station and filling it up, I made it another 1/2 mile and it died again. Apparently it sucked trash in the line, and I had to tow it home. I havent had it out since, and I am really debating on getting rid of it now, Its always something with it.
