Installing a Fuel Pressure Gauge on 87-93 Mustangs

This article will cover the base steps to install an fuel pressure gauge. This article can be used for most fuel injected 5.0 motors as well. I’ve also included the original instructions :fuel_pressure_gauge.pdf.

Some things you'll need
  • Teflon Tape
  • Shop Towels or Old Rags
  • Screwdriver
  • 1/2” Wrench
  • Adjustable Wrench

De-pressurize Fuel Lines

Before you do anything disconnect your battery!

First you will need to find the schrader valve on your fuel line. If you look at the picture above you should be able to find it either on the fuel rail or the fuel supply line.

After have found the schrader valve, you will want to have some shop towls handy so the fuel doesn’t get everywhere. I used an old bowl and shop towels to be safe.

Pre-assemble the 90º Swivel to the Adapter

For this step you will need Teflon Tape and both the 1/2” and adjustable wrench. Take the telfon tape and wrap around the 90º swivel a few times, this will help the swivel from leaking. After you have wrapped the swivel with telfon tape hand tighten it. Then using the 1/2” and adjustable wrench tighten the adapter and swivel about 1/4 a turn more (do not over tighten).

Connect the Adapter to the Schrader Valve

Hand tighten the adapter to the schrader valve, then tighten 1/4 turn with the 1/2” wrench. Do NOT over tighten the adapter, this will break the adapter’s internal seal.
Connect the Gauge to the Adapter

Wrap the gauge’s threads with telfon tape to prevent leaks. Now tighten the gauge to the adapter but make sure the gauge is in a readable position. Use the adjustable wrench to help tighten.
Checking for Leaks

This is an easy but important step. After you have everything together and everything looks good, take you time here an review everything again. Once your sure everything is correct, connect your battery. Now you will need to go grab your keys. Turn the ignition “on” but DO NOT START the car, this will prime your fuel lines. Now you want to go check for leaks, again take your time. Prime and check for leaks several times to be certain there are no leaks. If you find any leaks shut the car off and disconnect the battery. Follow this write up again until there are no leaks.
