Well, if you were gonna put a clutch behind a H/C/I 302 with a 150 shot using a Tremec 3550, what would you use?

Right now, my King Cobra doesn't hold up......and I'm about to put a 3550 in it and ditch the T5.

The 3550 comes with a Centerforce, will this be enough, or do I need like a spec stage 3 or something?

Thanks,

-Will

Have you ever tried a Steeda clutch? That's what I run in the GT, and it's held up to quite a bit of abuse. They're priced at right around $159.

Never Used the Spec clutches, although I hear the Stage II and III are very Good, but my CenterForce clutches have held their own.  It works for me, so that's what I'll continue to use until I'm making too much power...lol.

I've got a RAM 900 clutch going behind this Kenne Belled 306 combo, as per Keith Craft's recommendation.

It's matched up with the RAM flywheel that's also on the motor.

Well guys, I'm thinking stage III.  This is gonna be an AFR 185 headed car, with quite a bit more and a 150 shot  Grin

That is, if my Centerforce (that is coming with the Tremec) doesn't hold up.

Thanks guys,

If your looking for a strong clutch that will handle just about any nitro shot you want to throw at it you should try looking at  http://www.zoomclutch.com/ they have a clutch setup for just about everyone even those few with over a grand... but thats just my thoughts on the matter.

Another vote for the Spec stage 3. I’m putting 482ft#’s to the rear wheels and it’s holding fine.

f*** centerforce! I got a mismatched duel friction clutch & pressure plate of theirs last year. After pulling the TKO several times, and listening to the corral “experts” tell me I didn’t know how to adjust a clutch. The measurements proved they f***ed up. But because I installed it, I got a big “GFY” or “buy another one” from the folks at centerforce.  Beef

What exactly was it doing?  Mine has a slight chatter at idle, and a slight vibration around 3000 RPM's?

The clutch disk was too thick, so when the pressure plate was torqued down there wasn’t enough of an air gap to release the disk. So basically the clutch wouldn’t release and allow the transmission to shift. In talking with other Centerforce clutch owners, many of them have experienced symptoms such as the transmission not easily shifting into 1st. And grinding into reverse. While these are usually dismissed by the “experts” as being adjustment related. I found too many people claiming they had no trouble adjusting previous clutches, but could not find the proper adjustment for the Centerforce. This leads me to believe Centerforce may be experiencing some quality issues in regards to their disk tolerances. Of course they were offended at the idea that they may have allowed an out of spec disk into the marketplace. And informed me I could return it for inspection. But since I didn’t thoroughly inspect all tolerances and discover the problem before installation. They had no intention of sending me a free replacement.

So fighting the urge to drive to Arizona and Frisbee it through their front window, I decided to eat the $350 loss, and make the first time the last time I’ll ever buy or recommend a centerfarce.

Ford king cobra for a T-5
Spec stage 2 or 3 for a Tremec.

These are the only brands I’ll vouch for.

A buddy of mine had a McLeod clutch (sintered iron) and it held well from the 327 stroker with a Novi 2000.

My king cobra sheared the friction material clean off the flywheel side of the disc. In fact, 60% of it was still intact when I disassembled it. It just sheared and was trapped between the flywheel and disc. My car has heads/cam/intake and a dry kit, but has never been on sticky tires.

Since I've read about MANY other King Cobra owners having identical issues to mine, I could never in good faith recommend them. A SPEC stage III on the other hand, seems to be very highly regarded. I know some folks have chatter with them, but the two people I know personaly with them do not. Both of them use the SPEC specified flywheel, FWIW.

it's stock... the only thing I have done is a catback, and 1.7 rockers.. and oh, did i menttion at time of dyno it had 145k on the clock.. I'd say that's not bad for a stocker with high miles... now the NEW motor.. that's a differnt story.. I'll get it dyno'd after it's in and I get the bugs out.

Is there a minimun power you should have for the SPEC stage III to work to it's fullest?

Like let's say you want to put one on a midly modded engine.  Is it worth it?
