I finally got around to uninstalling my cam tonight! I noticed there is some "play" in the timing chain, should I worry about this or just ignorer it? Here is a clip I took with my digital camera [View]. If you would replace what timing chain/gear set would you replace it with? I don't want to worry about it later on after more mods come. Oh, 1 more thing, how can I tell if this is the stock cam? I 99% sure it is but I want to make sure.

Joe, If there's play in your timing chain, you'll wanna replace it. Better safe than sorry. Considering the mileage, it needs one anyhow. I watched the video clip, and it looks like the one in our old LX did before we replced it (the motor had 90K). Just get a Ford Motorsport double roller timing chain........I've had great luck with them, and they're pretty reasonably priced.

Would replace the Tchain. Now are you gonna degree the cam? If so, get an adjustable chain, if not any double roller will work. BTW the cam numbers should on the back. post them up and I'll see if I can tell what it is.

I looked on the back and didn't see anything. I'll go grab it now and look at it in better light.

Cloyes Tru-roller is what I'm running in mine. Seems to hold together nicely at 7000.

Yes you have a stock cam. Yes you need to change the timing set. No, you cant worry about nickle and dime stuff when building a stout bottom end.
And dont worry, Dozer is a good guy.

You've already been advised enough times about changing the chain. Now are you gonna degree the cam? If so, get an adjustable chain Ok, so it's been quite a while since I built an engine, but I've never heard of an adjustable timing chain. Back in the day, and still, the phasing (degreeing) of the cam was done with offset bushings put into the cam pin hole on the sprocket for the cam. These usually produced a change in 2-4 degree increments typically. Is there some kind of chain now that the degreeing is done with??? I'm not sure how they would do that. Steve #7

I believe it works that way, it allows you to put the pin in differently to achieve some variability in the timing. I believe so please correct me if im wrong
