What is your build up (302 based, 351 based, etc.) and redline? What is your rear end gear ratio? What is your cruising RPM at, say, 70MPH?
Pondering a move to a C4 for my car.
Thanks! Kevin

This is going in a racing-oriented car right? I would never drop a C4 in anything that will see a lot of street cruising. I would guesstimate you're gonna turn about 4000-4500 RPM at 70mph assuming you go with a racing trans like Performance Automatic's entry-level transmissions.

What is your build up (302 based, 351 based, etc.) and redline? ........331, redline @ 6000.
What is your rear end gear ratio?.............3.25:1
What is your cruising RPM at, say, 70MPH? ...........never had a tach on it to be able to tell. Will have one before the end of the summer.
C-4's have always been very popular. There are different "duty" versions so you want to be sure not to get one made for whimpier engines. There are also all kinds of performance build kits for them as well as aftermarket built performance versions. In the Australian Falcons like I have they even used only C-4's in automatic cars behind the 351 Clevelands with 300 factory HP. These cars are performance legends in Australia (Falcons in general).
You can get a C-4 cheap at a bone yard. Spend money on performance parts. Its just like building an engine, you can make just about whatever performance level you want.
Others will chime in with horror stories about a C-4 they had in a car. There's always a percentage of everything that sucks. Generally though they have a dependable history.

The C4 hasn't been in my car long, its a H/C/I 302 with a blower....Tranny has held up great so far..... IMHO, with a set of 3.27's or 3.08's, you shouldn't have any problem with daily driving. I've got 3.73's, and I sit a lil high on the RPM's when cruising. I believe its roughly 3,000 at 60.......If you had the $$$$, I'd suggest a C4 with a Gear Vendors OD But in all honesty, a buddy of mine is driving the car daily right now, and has no complaints about it...Its got a Transbrake w/ reverse manual vb, and as long as you're willing to shift, its fine.... just MAKE SURE that you get good converter. You can get a custom converter to your door for less than $500. -Will

I have several questions regarding converters (choosing the right RPM to stall), tranny coolers, and driving around in shear on the C4 (say, 3500 stall, cruising at 2200).. I will make more posts later...
thank you so far, and please keep posting..
(maybe I should have started thsi thread in GD or BBB)

I'll advise a plate style cooler, as opposed to a fin style. And IMHO, anyone's best bet on gettin the right converter for their car, is just gettin a custom converter, for their combo, their intentions with the car, etc.....You can get a custom converter to your door for less than $500, and its more than worth it IMHO... -Will

You will first need to learn and understand what "stall speed" is. THen you can figure what you need for your car.

302 HCI with 4.10 gears and a PA supercomp C4
With 28" tall tires I turn 3500rpm at 60-65mph.
If I had it to do over again, I'd do an AOD with a lockup converter.

Would that car even run a full quarter mile? No cage, either... hmm? ? ? ?
I assume your car was set up for 1/8 mile, not 1/4 mile.

It will run about 125 in the quarter, which is about 5900 rpm. I don't have a cage because it isn't a race car. It's a fast street car/weekend toy.

At the local track, you dont need a cage until 6.99 (1/8 mile) or faster. That's why I haven't leaned on the tuneup any, because 7 teens is quick enough to be fun without having to plop down a grand for a cage and ruin the car's streetability. I'm currently running a 150 shot with only 10-11 degrees of timing and ET Streets. I'm sure there's a minimum of 3 tenths in it with slicks and more timing, but that would put me well into no-no land.
I appreciate the compliments.

Mostly for the 1/8, but I think it will make it in the 1/4 just will have to turn it a little more.

I got rid of my C4 because of the heat it generated, and was pissed after the last lived only a few months. I haven't had a cooling problem since I got rid of it. I had a Coan convertor, I filled out a spec sheet and gave the guy a copy of the cam card. I wanted it to stall up to 3000 at launch, and it was dead on. 10" converter about 6 years ago was about $425.

Are you going to Smackdown? If so, I would love to take a look at your car and the setup. How does the car act on the highway, namely trans temp?

Have you had a GPS in the car to confirm actual RPM at 60? Yours looks waaaaaay low. I'm running a taller tire and tighter converter, and I'm 700rpm higher at that speed.

306 cid, 4000 stall, 4:30 gears, 26" ET Streets. Shifting at 6800-7000, goes through the lights just before the shift light comes on. See's a lot of street duty, RPM's are up there at cruising speeds, but not so high I won't drive it. I keep it around 60 mph on the E-way. The trans is a Hughes C-4, full manual, reverse pattern valve body.

"Are you going to Smackdown? If so, I would love to take a look at your car and the setup. How does the car act on the highway, namely trans temp?" Yes, I'll be there. Haven't missed one yet. It's totally streetable. I could easily drive it daily. Tranny temp is typically 160 degrees. I've seen a max of 180 on the brake. I highly recommend a stacked plate cooler. McCarthy, No gps. My friend is a state trooper. The ol converter is efficient. (7% slip in high)

Go to your personal gallery, which is listed under your avatar picture. Open the picture you want. Right click, properties. Copy the shortcut. Go to a post where you want to insert the picture. Paste the shortcut to the picture and put the letters "img" inside of the [ ] brackets BEFORE the link, and then do the same for after the link, but put / in front of image. This tells the HTML code to stop the image.
Any more questions just ask.
