Alright, here's a question that will probably be obvious to all of you who've done this before, but I've never pulled a passanger car engine before, so please be nice.

When lifting the engine, I'm planning on using the holes in the cylinder heads to put some grade 8 bolts through, but which holes do I use to mount the engine on the stand?  I'm guessing where the tranny mounts to the block?  Is this right?  Anyone know offhand what size/ length I'd need?

I use either the bolt whole in the back and front  of the heads (egr port on rear) ,or leave the bottom intake on and use the plate sold at sumitt that bolts to it.  That is what I have since it is a hell'of lot easier.

For the engine stand, I actually bought grade 8 bolts and washers for that too.  They are 3" long, and have the same thread pattern as your tranny bolts.  I took a tranny bolt with me as a sample.

I keep them stored in a baggy inside the engine stand yoke for later use.

No, I sure don't.  Not off the top of my head.  Just pull one and take it down.  They should have a thread sizer that you can screw the tranny bolt into to tell you exactly what size to get.  I like this option because I always have them if I need them, like when I had Liz's motor up on the stand.

Another option is to use a set of your existing motor bolts or find a set not being used (I want to say head bolts, but am not sure if that is right).  They might be longer, but you can shore up the slack with four sockets placed on the bolts between the stand and the bolt head (using a washer of course in between).  My friend does it this way, but I don't know the specifics.

I seem to remember the tranny bolts requiring a 1/2-inch socket.  So it's probably either a 5/16"-18 or -24.

Just like what John said or goto the local parts store and ask for a replacement bolts. Then you can buy the grade 8 bolts and washers

They are 7/16 or 1/2" coarse (20) thread. Bolts are cheap enough that you could just buy both.

Removing the engine, I use 5/16 bolts with washers and a small chain in the intake bolt holes. The usually bend a little, pitch 'em and buy more.

they are 7/16 coarse thread which is 14  (that is 7/16-14)  (1/2" coarse thread would be 1/2-13)  The long head bolts with a couple washers make great engine stand bolts, besides, you can't reused them on your engine.
