Has anyone ever made their own boss engine by putting 351 heads on it? Does anyone know what's involved or if anything is different between the two heads enough to cause something other than just bolting them on? I am sure you have to have specific length pushrods.

I think the 351 heads have 1/2" head bolt holes versus 3/8" bolt holes...no 100% sure though.

If you're talking about windsor heads on a 302, then the only thing you need is the special ARP bolt kit. Jegs part number is 070-254-3708. The bolts have 3/8" threads and a 1/2" shank, which cures the different sized hole dilemma Andy speaks of.

If you're talking about cleveland heads, then that's alot more involved, but still not too difficult. Check these links:

There's also some good info and diagrams concerning the cleveland swap on page 152 of the 2004 Ford Racing Performance Parts catalog.

Thanks for the info everyone, but after doing some more reading I will not even be looking any further into this. With the size of the valves this combo would be best suited for high RPM which the application is not. The Cleveland heads will flow too much for the use that the engine is going to see.

Too bad man. The BOSS 302 had massive valves for the street, and made power clear through to 8,000 RPM (after removing the 6,000 RPM rev limiter, heh heh). It was a true screamer. There's massive amounts of volume there, and potential. Add a supercharger, and you have a great powerband that, instead of making horsepower and torque way up in the revs (above 5,000), it will pull like a beast. MMMMM. Thanks for the articles guys. I have something to wish for for Christmas now.  Smiley

This is for the wife's car and it's only going to be driven on the street and she is not a racer. She just wants something that will be real resepctable and able to hold it's own. I agree that an engine with the 351 Cleveland heads would be a real screamer, but the way she drives it's just not practical for her. Good that you can benefit from the articles though. Keep us posted if you go ahead with it.

221, 255, 260, 289 and 302 have 7/16 head bolt holes and 351w and 351C both have 1/2. No SBF ever had a 3/8 head bolt thank god.

Awww, too bad mate.

I'll certainly let you guys know about it if I ever get the $$$$ to do it. I'd love to bolt a set onto my stock '90, and add a supercharger to keep the massive volume of the valves from killing airflow velocity. Massive power at low RPMs makes for a great street car.  Evil
