hey i"ve been looking at harmonic balancers and fluid dampers cuz mine is shot.  I want to put a cam and sum heads and maybe an intake if i can get sum good deals.
Gareth  Roll Eyes lol So fluid dampers are probably the way to go but is it really worth the extra $$ for me. The less i can spend the better, and also how do i find out what weight i will need. Any help would be appreciated Thanks

If you are working on a newer five liter ('80 and up)it is a 50oz balance.  The old 289/302's were 28 oz balance.

LOL I got all out of breath reading that!!!
I believe you need the 50oz damper. (actually a 34 or so oz Wink )

Fluidamper is big bucks--- And some say detrimental to the life of your engine :/
Check out Romac and Pioneer elastomer dampers.
I'll ask Dean next time I stop by his shop, to see what kind of deals there are right now.

There are Huge threads in the Corral tech boards on this subject....

Romac makes a really good balancer. Fluidamper, IMO, is kind of a waste of your money. Unless you're going to be making like 9 bajillion trillion horsepower, something in the middle of the market will work perfectly fine.

Just look at this way...anything is better than stock.  Grin Nasty ass rusty POS.

I've been looking into getting a new balancer also. In MM&FF they had an article on the professional products balancer and they where impressed with them. The price on them aren't too shabby. Smiley

The 1968 engine I am building of course uses a 28 oz. balancer. I am replacing the original with a quality aftermarket stock replacement one (about $70). In my case I happen to be replacing the pistons, rods, and crank so everything is being balanced as perfectly as possible already by my speed shop. The block has also been align honed.

I don't know if a newer engine can be balanced in such a way as to use a 28 oz. balancer or not? I would think if the assembly can all be balanced (all pistons the same weight, rods machined to same weight, and crank balanced with flex plate and a 28 oz balancer) then it would be possible to get away with a 28 ouncer. Perhaps the construction of the components don't make this possible? Does anyone know about this? Certainly the less weight that you are slinging around the better it would be for the engine.

Well the crank and rods are the same, the only difference would be in the Flywheel.  You would have to change the flywheel and Balancer.  I have yet to find a 28oz Flywheel with a 10.5" clutch pattern, other than an SFI approved big money unit.
