There was a thread not long ago that involved 20w50 being too heavy for the mod motors, how about 5w 50 syntec??

Errr

I'm not sure but I'd say stick with 5W30 as the MFR's recommendation.

Not even remotely a fan of 5w30 as I know why they origionally went to that formulation.. With the supercharger generating a bit more heat I was hoping to add some more protection and I run the Syntec in everything else I own..

The close tolerances in the oil pump and other bottom-end components isn't fond of heavy oil.  Besides, isn't your first number the one you're concerned with when hot?

If anything, I'd have to say 10w30 or 15w30.  The 30 is the cold number, IIRC.

Nevermind

I still wouldn't go anywhere near 50 weight with that mod motor.

20W50 blew up my oil filter at operating temperature.

DUnno if this is much help, but i always ran 5w50 in my 5.0. Reason being when i was doing road trips through the province, it could be 10*F in one area and 110*F in another. It always held up.

Howerever my dad with his 5.4 wont go near 50w oil, i think he also runs 5w30.

I've been using 5w40 Shell Rotella T for quite some time in several different cars without any problems.

Well, piss in the crankcase then.

5 20 was speced later on in it's production life for reasons only to do with fuel economy. 5w30 or 5w20 will both work but I personally wouldn't go much further.

I wouldn't run anything heavier than 5w-30. Like Ralph said, the tolerances are very tight in the mod motors.

Well.......

Guess I will go and get some different oil for the thing in the morning then... Wink

On the plus side, I was waiting to hear what everyone said before I did the oil so the 5w-50 will end up in the Stealth... LOL

My Dad's been running the same Rotella T 5w40 in his E350 V10 van since he got it and hasn't any issues with it at all.

My line of thinking was the same as yours in the beginning Steve, but after talking to our local Mod motor guru, Jake Lamotta, I'm going to stick with the 5W-20 Amsoil.  I've always run 20-50 in my pushrod motors, but he advised me that would be a big mistake.  He's been in more of these motors than anyone I know.  I wouldn't go heavier than the 5w-30.

I ran 20W-50 in the Mustang til I took the stocker 302 out (still running good) at 245,000 miles.  Now I run 10W-40 in the 306.

In the truck (4.6), I'm running 5W-20.

Never run 20/50 in anything unless it is fixing to blow up.

Never run 20/50 in anything unless it is fixing to blow up, or leaks like a siv with anything less.
