Yep, I FINALLY have all the required parts and such for my brake my upgrade. Gonna do the bang for the buck 13mm Cobra Brake upgrade with new braided SS lines, Brembo rotors, 3 Vavoline Syn Power bottles of brake fluid, and all the necessary hardware. Should be a h00t. It's probably a walk in a part but you know, it's me doing it. I get excited because I'm doing something new.  Then get pissed when I f*** something up.  If I remember, I'll take pics. And if I take pics, I'll eventually make a tech article. Yes, me. Scary, huh?  Wish me luck. |

Well.... Got up today and started at it. Got the car up on all four stands (first time for me, kinda nervous during it) and all 4 wheels could spin. So I say sweet, I'm in. I start with the FR tire, take off the lugnuts, then take the wheel off. I'm greeting by a fading, rusted out stock piece that is begging to be swapped out. I then take off the brake line where it gets attached to the caliper. Since I'm smart and all, I attach it tie it so it's vertical, so that way brake fluid doesn't leak out. So I start on the caliper bracket and.....that's it. I spend two or three hours trying every ghetto rigged contraption I can think of to remove these rusted to s*** nuts. Nothing happened. I mean I tried everything I could think of. Tried to smack the wrench with that metal thing that you use for the jack, tried a socket wrench, then a regular wrench and hell, I even tried sticking a bent pole into and kicking the crap out of it. Oh well. Guess it's finally time to buy myself an impact wrench at Sears or something. Any recommendations for a reputable one that's affordable? And yes, I'm taking pics and eventually plan to write a tech article. |

Craftsman has good ones. You can look at it two ways, spend a lot once, or get a cheapie, and when it breaks, throw it away and get a new one. I prefer choice 1. I've got an Ingersol, and have never had a problem with it. Usually, if it won't break it loose, it just breaks it.  |

Chowder, if you don't have a good air compressor, go to Harbor Freight and get their cheapo 1/2" electric impact wrench (it was about $50) and some impact swivels/sockets...also get a 1/2" to 3/8" socket reducer so you can use 3/8" sockets with the impact. Rebecca got me one for Christmas a couple years and LOVE it! I've used on things I probably shouldn't have but it's saved me from busting my knuckles on numerous occasions.

Well actually, I do have a stand alone air compressor that's actually pretty good. Considering that, what would you guys recommend now? Anything from Craftsman or something specific? I'd check into that Andy but I'd like to have it soon so unless the shipping is like 2 or 3 days (without charging me an assload) I guess that means getting one from a store. Chris, is penetrating oil similar to WD40 or is it much, much stronger? Thank ya Pasia. I'll screw something up just for you.

Well f me, I didn't even know they had actual stores. Thought it was strictly an online thang. Just checked the locations and theres one about 10-15 minutes away. So now that I'll be checking that out, any recommendations on what to get? Does it work like if I have an air compressor, the best bang for the buck would be to get one that uses that, or just get an impact gun like that one you posted that uses just a power cord? One more thing. To tackle most jobs, what torque rating range would be ideal? I know the more the better but I don't want to overspend here. Thanks. BTW, looks like it's creeping to page two with no progress accomplished yet on my part. The gifts I possess. |
