I need to do my leak-down test (finally) and I need the cork to help me figure out where TDC is.

I think it will also help me cope with the results.   Crazy

That's a good reason to drink, right?... right?

What's Leak-down test

Its where you drink a bottle of wine and see how long you can hold it until you "leak".

What's Leak-down test
It's a test for an engine where you put compressed air into the cylinders to find out if/ where you have a problem with your engine.

I tested for compression, but this will tell me how much the cylinders are leaking and where.

I forsee a depressing prognosis.

What's Leak-down test

It's when you turn on your blinkers and you check how long it takes the blinker fluid to leak out. Grin

Chances are, I won't drink any wine and just use an extension or something in the spark plug hole.  But honestly, I think the wine would help!

So where did you score a leak down tester from?? Hell, had I known you needed one, I would have sent you mine to use...

Great excuse to down a bottle of wine...but I have to ask what you need to use the cork for?  Doesn't a spark plug work...probably a lot better???

Aww, you're sweet!  I just broke down and bought one from Summit.

You're probably right, the thought was not to scratch the piston... not that it really matters.  You're talking about using the plug backwards in the hole, right?

To figure out where TDC is?  I am confused now.  I was just talking about putting a cork or something in to watch when it pused up and didn't move to make sure I was at TDC.

Cara, if I'm not mistaken piston location shouldn't really matter as to the leakdown rate.   Unless you're testing for head gasket???

Oh I gotcha now.  I'm still not sure what you're going to use a cork for...to stick down into the spark plug hole?  I was assuming you were going to use it to seal a spark plug hole. LOL

You can make a REALLY simple tool like that by taking an old spark plug, breaking all the ceramic out of it, tapping the inside with I forget what size, then running a bolt through that, and just clean up the end of the bolt to avoid digging into the piston.  I would think a cork is going to compress too much/not be solid, coupled with the fact it could fall off whatever you've got it on the end of.

Don't you need a degree wheel to do that though using a piston stop?  Lemme think a minute, and go find the details of what I'm talking about.

Like Ralph said, you're not shooting for exact TDC.  Both valves are closed right around the point the piston starts it's upward stroke on the compression stroke...think of a camshaft, there's quite a bit of area where both valves are closed...the upstroke of compression, and the downstroke of exhaust.

Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're trying to do...

Might be easier to just pop the valve covers off and watch the rockers.

To do a leak down test the piston does not have to be DEAD NUTS at TDC.

Just use your thumb to find close TDC by feeling air pressure build.  THen if you want it more perfect just look in the spark plug hole with a flashlight.

Then when you are done drink the bottle of wine.

Oh I have seen some people just use a stick or a pencil too to find TDC.

So how about this... I go out to do my leak down test,  and just for fun, I check and see if she'll start up.  Crazy car did... first time.      Smoked like mad for the first minute... I assume that was because the walls were soaked with fuel.

Given her compression numbers, I eventually want to do a leakdown test anyways (probably this weekend), but for now.... Huh  I don't know.  At least she starts.  How incredible weird!  I still want to know what was wrong in the first place.

My car is most definitely female.

And Dave- yeah, I was just using a cork so see when the piston was rising- it should push out when it's up top.

*I can't hear you*  Wink

Just kidding.  I will do a leak-down test and try to figure out where the issue is.  Depending on the results, I will most likely take it apart.

It seems like a lot of work (I am up for the challenge), and a bit of money just to take it apart, that's if there's nothing wrong.

this is what you do.. take it apart.. Grin see? that simple. Tongue

no, seriously, take it out, tear it down, go to summit and get the forged 347 kit, take the kit and the block to an engine builder, have them machine the block and balance everything, then BAM! you're all set to put it together, or you can have them do it. Grin see? simple. Grin
